Tradesman: Working in the Construction Industry

 

Becoming a construction or a skilled tradesman is a great option for those who are interested in pursuing a great job in the building and construction industry. These people are highly skilled and trained. Although they are not professionals, they are a well respected and much sought after requirement for any construction site.

Skills involve:

  • Labouring and site maintenance
  • Carpentry
  • Joinery
  • Plastering
  • Brickwork
  • Painting and decorating
  • Plumbing and heating
  • Masonry

The construction trades personnel can do basic tasks like electrical wiring, roofing, or plumbing of a new home or building. They can also provide repair and maintenance services, like for heaters and security system. Aside from these manual services, a construction trades personnel can also provide consultation and designs for projects. Some even do supervisory roles, especially when dealing with a huge crew. Even after the construction, the tradesman can offer maintenance support for the building.

 

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)

 

Set up in the 90s, the scheme keeps a database of those working in construction that achieve (or can demonstrate they have already attained) an agreed level of occupational competence. Successful applicants are issued with a card giving them a means of identification and proof of their achievements.

Today there are over 1.7 million cards in circulation, and they’re increasingly demanded as evidence of occupational competence by many, including contractors, public and private clients.

CITB administers the scheme under contract. Cards cost £30 and the Health, Safety & Environment Test is £17.50.
