Working in the Industrial sector

The word "industry" can evoke images of smokestacks across a cityscape when you hear it. Since industry is closely tied to factories, the images are appropriate. Working in an industrial workplace does not mean sitting in office chairs and having meetings. The atmosphere of an industrial employer's workplace is different for those at the bottom of the management chain than it is for various ranks of employees in the services sector.

Industry

Industry refers to the commercial production and sale of goods. Industrial companies make tangible items to sell to the public, government or other entities. They create products where no product existed through manufacturing processes. They build factories to create these products and hire engineers and scientists to design new ones.

Repetitive

Industrial workplaces are typically more active than office environments. Employees are on their feet for much of the day. They stand and walk around the factory during their shift instead of typing on a computer. Much of their work is repetitive. For example, machinists may create thousands of the same part for weeks until they fulfill an order, or an assembly line employee may put the same part on the same piece of a product throughout his shift.

Environment

An industrial workplace is typically noisy. The sound of machinery running is prevalent throughout the building. Employees wear ear plugs, hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, depending on the safety hazards of their particular workplaces. Work shifts are carefully regulated by employers, and employees may clock in and out of work when they start or end their shifts, or take breaks. Office employees may keep track of their own time sheets, and employers may not require them to use a punch card.

Safety

Safety is usually a major priority for industrial employers. Employees are trained to know how to use their machinery, do their jobs and to walk around in the factory safely. Employees who do not adhere closely to safety protocol on their jobs may lose them.
