What does a Cleaner do? (job description, responsibilities, skills & qualifications)
In the UK hospitality sector cleaners play an important role in maintaining hygiene standards in various establishments such as hotels, restaurants, pubs and bars. Typically cleaners are responsible for maintaining rooms, public areas, restrooms, dining areas. Cleaners in the hospitality sector may also be responsible for certain laundry and housekeeping duties. Occasionally cleaners will be assigned deep cleaning tasks such as carpet and upholstery washing. At all times cleaners must adhere to health & safety regulations.
To be successful in this role a cleaner will have the following skills:
1. Knowledge of Cleaning techniques & products - whilst training may be provided, knowledge and experience of basic cleaning protocols and products will be helpful.
2. Physicality - the role can be physically demanding and a cleaner should expect to be on their feet for the duration of the shift, whilst being able to bend and lift heavier objects.
3. Attention to detail - cleaners must ensure they maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
4. Health & Safety Awareness - a cleaner will have a sound understanding of relevant health and safety practices, in particular safe handling of cleaning chemicals.
How much does a Cleaner Earn?
The base salary for a cleaner is typically around the National Living Wage dependent on the age of the worker:
£6.40 for those under 18 years of age
£8.60 for those between the ages of 18-20
£11.44 for those 21 years of age and older
Experience and location will effect the base salary of all waiters.
