What does a Kitchen Porter do?
A Kitchen Porter plays a fundamental role in the smooth operation of a kitchen, ensuring that chefs and cooks have a clean, organised workspace to prepare food. Their duties typically include a variety of tasks focused on maintenance and support, such as:
1. Cleaning & Washing - primarily a Kitchen Porter will keep the kitchen clean, wash dishes & cutlery and all cooking equipment. A Kitchen Porter must maintain an organised station and ensure the kitchen and the front of house have enough clean equipment to service guests during a busy service.
2. Basic Food Preparation - occasionally a Kitchen Porter will be required to assist kitchen staff with basic food preparation, including peeling vegetables etc.
3. Assist with Stock Management - assist kitchen staff with deliveries and ensure storerooms & fridges are kept clean.
Kitchen Porters must be hardworking, efficient, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. They need to be good team players, as their role involves supporting various members of the kitchen staff. No formal qualifications are usually required for the role, making it an entry point for many into the catering and hospitality industry. The ability to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation is essential for success in this role.
