What does a Waiter do? (responsibilities & skills)

A waiter works in a cafe or a restaurant to ensure that diners have an enjoyable experience. Typically a waiter will seat customers, take and serve their orders and provide check ins to ensure food and drinks are satisfactory. A waiter may also be required to take payments from customers at the end of their meal and to clean / reset the table ready for new diners. in addition a waiter may be asked to help with special events hosted at the venue, and must always adhere to health & safety regulations, and food & hygiene standards.

To be successful in the role a waiter will have the following skills:

1. Customer Service - provide the customer with a polite and friendly service ensuring all needs are met and an enjoyable experience is provided
2. Communication Skills - a waiter is the point of communication between the kitchen and the customer. Being able to clearly communicate orders and requests as well as any problems, is an essential part of the role.
3. An ability to Multitask - at the height of a busy dinner or lunch service, a waiter will be required to monitor several tables at once. The ability to prioritise tasks is critical to executing the role effectively.
4. Knowledge of food and beverage items - this will be dependent on the restaurant menu, and a waiter will usually be introduced to these particulars. However a knowledge of the menu prior to starting the role can be helpful.

How much does a Waiter Earn?

The base salary for a waiter is typically around the National Living Wage dependent on the age of the worker:

£6.40 for those under 18 years of age
£8.60 for those between the ages of 18-20
£11.44 for those 21 years of age and older

In addition to the base salary, waiters can expect to receive tips. The amount of tips received will be dependent on the type of restaurant and clientele.

Experience and location will effect the base salary of all waiters.
